grimes - visions

this project has been special to me since i was very young - my dad was a big fan of grimes' early work, and this album has been part of the soundtrack to essentially my entire life. it invokes a very specific feeling for me - one of late-night drives, of walking down a dark manchester alleyway in the rain, of smoking cigarettes out of the window of my childhood bedroom, looking at my hometown below me. sonically, the album is beautiful - throughout every track, claire's haunting, ethereal vocals dance above dark, hollow synths, echoing and distorting and repeating over and over, giving the whole listening experience a psychedelic quality. while making this album, claire locked herself in her room for 2 weeks straight, doing everything she could to essentially 'go insane', and the album's lyrics reflect this, with short phrases being repeated over and over, contrasting with longer verses with surprisingly dark subject matter.
