Some could say it's driven by gaining knowledge to give a better chance of survival because gaining more skills is more likely to help you survive.

yes, please don't misinterpret my tone as insulting.

but this theory does not explain things i do for internal motivation. most people don't read fiction or poetry for the mere persona-building to gain higher chances in life, to meet some higher goal [things come to mind that would help me achieve my goals way quicker than when i'm reading or going outdoors]. i read (some, not all books) and go for walks because i enjoy it.

Ah I see where you're coming from. My counter point to this is that reading for enjoyment could also be a survival strategy.

Doing something that lowers stress could also be a way people survive because stress is needed for survival but too much can also detriment your mental health. So by keeping stress to survive highly dangerous situations and lowering stress to reduce it from damaging your mental health.

This might be a stretch but hopefully you see where I'm coming from :)

okay, *some* reading might lower stress levels (though have you took a glance at german idealism?).

but apart from that i can also willingly act against my wellbeing, we know and do dozens of those acts every day.

Thats true, I have no more to add because I can't really find a reason against that. Maybe because of anomalous choice and conformity that allows us to do that which shows that we in fact do have a choice because of our comfort. Maybe free will is stunted because of survival rather than vice versa.
