This is what's so interesting to me about the red vs blue button question that I've been seeing all over the internet. It comes to us right at a time when many many Americans are beginning to reshape their opinions on violence, and in which we are all confronting a much greater level of political violence, from our rulers, from political adversaries, from the police, and more.

And yet, the deep question of "how much power do we have to change the situation we have been dealt?" is largely steam-rolled in favor of arguments that one side is selfish or the other is stupid. Really we are being posed the question of self-preservation or self-sacrifice. The framing you use for the question is maybe more revealing than your answer. Are you a victim to a world where many will die, forced to choose between certainly saving yourself or possibly saving everyone? Or are you in a world where everything is fine, but only if everyone chooses not to stray course.
