I had to get to the bottom of the MapQuest not changing the lake name conspiracy and the most concrete explanation I can come up with as of right now is that: MapQuest doesn't pull it's data from the US government (where Google Maps does). MapQuest uses data provided by a Dutch company based out of the Netherlands called TomTom.
