one thing this makes me think of is the fact people used to just own and consume less. clothes would last a lifetime, if not generations, and be endlessly darned and sewed up. meat was a luxury good you might have once or twice a week. and things like pens or chairs or clocks or pans were expected to be bought once and kept, replaced and repaired only as needed. weird to think how thats changed
