as much as i hate how important money is, i wonder what the alternative is...someone has to do an experiment with a small group of people to see if we can find new ways to structure society

I think people have tried quite a few alternatives, though nothing really works. We just gotta thug it out I guess.

imagine a company/government branch whose entire job is running experiments to find alternatives to the current way of life, sustainable at the scale of our current population. They take a small group of volunteers and send em off to an island telling them to recreate society in whatever way they know how. They're given a problem, like the problem is economy or money. Their version of society can be identical but they have to address the shortcoming that they're assigned.

so let's say a group of 35 people are shipped off to an island and they're told to terraform the island to their need, rebuild society and address their assigned problem: Wealth Inequality...and you let the experiment run for a few generations during which there will be no contact between them and the rest of society, other than the scientists who will simply observe the attempt take place.

that would make for such an interesting plot of a dystopian story.

That’s a good idea for a story! And there are some books and shows with that plot.

Now that I think about it, we’ve noticed by observing a lot of cults that they keep devolving into sexual abuse, it’s crazy how often that keeps happening… GOD DAMN IT this idea was doomed from the start.

In my honest opinion, humans are too neurotic and greedy to have unchecked power. All of these situations; cults, the infamous island etc. happen when one person just has free reign to do whatever they want. If you can have a system where no one person or one specific group can have uncontrolled reign, people act relatively okay. Most problems derive from those reasons.

The problem is humans are always attracted towards power…even if you have multiple groups keeping each other in check, all it takes is one human to unify the groups and before you know it the groups flock together and we end up with another selfish and corrupt government. Ugh

The alternative is finding some incorruptible people to lead but I feel like people who are best fit to lead the government usually don’t want anything to do with it. Like those farmers that only at war time pick up their weapons and lead their country to victory then go back to being a farmer. I forget who it was but there is a specific person in history who did just that and ngl that’s kinda badass.

Those gosh darn pesky humans…(I’m a human too but I’d rather not be reminded)
