the sighthound has one job and that job is to chase. to run, to push itself to the limits, to keep running and running until it catches the hare. there is no room for error for it. the sighthound knows it was born and bred for one thing and one thing only - to run. the sighthound knows it is lucky that it was born with the limbs to run, the heart large enough to sustain itself, the intrinsic mental desire to hunt and enjoyment from it. the sighthound has seen what its owner does to those who were not born with that enjoyment. the sighthound has seen the consequences.

the sighthound has seen the consequences of failure. the sighthound understands that its owner expects perfection. the sighthound understands that to lose the hare to the forest or another dog is a crime it would be less shameful to die than commit. the sighthound knows the value of obedience. the sighthound understands that bad dogs have the owner try to bash their heads in again.

the sighthound understands that to the owner, physical defects are equivalent to moral ones in imperfection. the sighthound therefore learns to run at full sprint with broken fingers and toes it broke in error, but knows that showing to the owner would do nothing and make things worse. the sighthound learns to never speak of the seizure.

the sighthound leaves the kennel and walks into the field. it is, despite everything, beautiful. the feeling of the wind brushing past it as it sprints, the sun on its coat, the dirt under its feet that pound against the floor. the feel of hare's blood on its tongue after a good chase. its satisfying, to stand there having beaten this round, taking a second to admire the birds singing in the trees. their song weaves through the branches, past the beautiful golden-green of translucent oak leaves catching rays, floating up until they mingle with the clouds that slowly make their way across the sky, like a dove's down feathers in a lazy breeze.

the sighthound knows not to care for the future. the sighthound knows that it's more fickle than the autumn weather. the sighthound comprehends its own lack of control. the sighthound is fundamentally aware that, in about 5-10 years, the owner will demand it mother children, to keep the owner's legacy alive. the sighthound understands it does not want children, and would fundamentally fail to raise them. the sighthound knows the owner does not care. the sighthound has seen the owner view other bitches as simply stock to produce offspring from its prize male hound, regardless of the male hounds desires. the sighthound knows the owner and the other dogs all agree that it belongs fully to the owner. the sighthound understands its lack of autonomy.

the sighthound tries to accept. its brown eyes stare as sheep-wool clouds bleed crimson from the setting sun, the field it runs spread out in front of it. the sighthound resigns itself.
