i have two thoughts on this that i want to add:
a) you correctly pointed out that character is less "full" than one might assume at first glance, demystifying the concept.

the authentic self is also a pleonasm, you said that as well
b) people still want to achieve this state "authentic individuality" because all day long they are put into opposition towards their fellow humans and therefore need to perform a set of skills and traits in order to get chosen
seeking individuality can be named as a strategy to:
i) win over competition;
ii) if failed, not resign
but then it is still illusion, therefore wrong
