the concept of becoming someone is factitious
the right to exist is given at birth for any living organism such as trees and animals
we as humans only start to believe we have to earn existence through what we are told around teenhood
the very concept of "becoming someone" is false because we are someone by default
any likes, dislikes, achievements, failures, beliefs or claims don't add to nor detract from the status of being someone
and by extension we are also all nobody
i'm saying there is no point in chasing individuality because one can never be more individual than one already is
one cannot "become" their "authentic self" because they already are no matter if they like it or not

i have two thoughts on this that i want to add:

a) you correctly pointed out that character is less "full" than one might assume at first glance, demystifying the concept.

the authentic self is also a pleonasm, you said that as well

b) people still want to achieve this state "authentic individuality" because all day long they are put into opposition towards their fellow humans and therefore need to perform a set of skills and traits in order to get chosen

seeking individuality can be named as a strategy to:
i) win over competition;
ii) if failed, not resign

but then it is still illusion, therefore wrong

i believe it's assessed that humans need to hold on to anything in order to cope with the reality of life which is that it has no inherent meaning or sense. religion first comes to mind, and then the rat race, and in our era it's glaringly obvious through social media.

do we grip our identity so tightly because we know that if we don't we'll have to face the fact that literally none of this matters? people call this an existential crisis but to me it seems it's the opposite, the veil of self-convincing sometimes thins and we have to stare straight at the sun. some people, upon realizing that none of the things they considered important in their lives are actually important, "lose their minds" and go do some kooky stuff, thinking the kooky stuff is the truth, perpetuating the cycle of pointlessness. it's inescapable as long as we live isn't it.

coping with the meaninglessness of reality is a farce, bro-philosophy. nobody truly gets depressed because "everything is meaningless" except for 14 yr. old pseudo-nitzscheans.

people might want to cope with the burden of their circumstances rather and this can actually be observed almosz everywhere

simply look at people who struggle, they don't lack purpose but rather material realization

of course the school drop-out or trapped office worker lacks purpose *in the mediated way*, they don't see a purpose because their material circumstances don't allow that. but it is wrong to assume that one can suffer from nothing, that is taugological and needs a negative assurance, which, again, is a wrong definition

simplifying the concept of "struggling" to a seemingly one-dimensional 'material circumstances' feels reductive from my pov, but i'm not going to use my own experience on a public site to prove a point that isn't supposed to be personal. additionnally i don't consider myself educated or well-read enough on the subject to argue further. so i'm just going to disagree and thank you for the interesting convo

Agree for the most part, but also humans have a lot more choice when it comes to lifestyle, self-expression, etc. Who you are isn’t just your preferences on the inside but also how you carry them out.

i'm saying even those things don't add to identity past delusion
as in for example someone who believes in a cause and works for it will be proud of it and make it part of their identity to feel like they are someone when it doesn't actually make them someone
or someone who dresses a certain way will hold onto that but again it's false to believe the way they dress allows them to be someone
attaching any one thing whether it's a job or belief or action or whatever to identity is delusion at best
my conclusion isn't negative, i'm basically saying one can do anything because none of it matters. it's when we start attaching things to our identity and thus make them important that we start feeling distraught.

They have meaning if you give it meaning. All of us humans are just “heat maps” of the concepts and things that are important to us or we identify with. That both includes what you’re drawn to, and what you choose for yourself. Idk, I’m a bit of an existentialist.

i tried to incorporate existentialism into my life but it just didn't work, i found that elements of absurdism fit more into how i view things. but well, saying i'm an absurdist or nihilist or existentialist or anything is just deluding myself into doing the very thing i talked about in my post.

people are free to give their lives meaning at their own scale, i honestly think it's the only way humans can make it through to old age without losing it. that might be why i'm losing it actually, because i just can't hold onto anything without realizing the meaning i'm giving it is fabricated.
