Yeah, fiberglass is (has been) very common because of its good properties and variable applications.
These are good questions. Luckily I have never had these, as our instructor had his good eyes on the weather forecast at all times and we were sailing in an area our instructor knew very well.
In my opinion sailing with a crew is much better (for me), as you can work as a team. Usually everyone has their duties and tasks, but you can help each other better in general, but especially when sh!t hits the fan, than when sailing alone.
On the other hand, I can imagine that sailing alone is much more fulfilling.
As with a much bigger crew, I have no idea, but I can imagine that you would need much more attention and organization, so the more you move up in numbers, you take more of the relaxation factor away.
