yes.. i know.. but if there are stimuli getting processed through senses and they get to certain specialised areas, the question is what is integrating all this to produce intentional thought/action

Almost certainly thousands of tiny specialised modules that communicate with each other.

It is their communication that you experience as thoughts and feelings.

There have been brain studies in which they looked at the effect of lesions on function. And it seems there's no single area that maintains "the self". And often, if one area is damaged, the brain tries to adapt and move some of that function in other areas, to compensate.
Which begs the question where is that self integrating sensory input and producing thoughts and actions. Because brain lesions seem to only impair the flow of information, not the possibility of function.

Yeah, wouldn’t that mean our brains are more of a committee having a conversation and keeping certain redundancies so that there isn’t a single point of failure than it is like an army with a general that controls every movement?

Because that’s how I see it.

It feels unified because they’re all usually trying to achieve the same thing. Sometimes they don’t, that can lead to you freezing like during a panic.
