We are all witnessing the decay of the open internet into a dark forest of predatory bots and algorithms. A modern burning of the library of Alexandria

The exciting tech that connected us all for the past two decades or so has cynically shifted course to a machine that exists to harvest your data and attention by companies that exist not even to turn a profit, but purely to monopolize their hold over us in the information era

The beautiful and sometimes scary place I grew up with has become but a mundane shambling corpse of regression towards the mean

There is no turning back, and the powers that be wish only to accelerate all of it in their pursuits to consolidate more and more power

Small communities like this are our last bastions in which to hide from the rising tide of slop and psychosis that's coming for us all. But nowhere will be safe forever.

Much love to all the real humans of this site. I hope one day we will find a new way to correct all of this and stay connected. But I just don't know.

I agree with you.

But at the same time, I still have hope.

We humans always have done and always will do things simply beacuse it's fun.

We share things we like, we curious about.

One way or another this will remain.

Like I've made a classic forum site just because I missed it being a thing.

Didn't wanted to monetize ever, just wanted to be existing.

No one uses it buf don't care.

And this is the thing.

We de thing just because.

Doesn't matter how much our life became commodified, somewhere deep we always have the need to do things just because we want to.

The era of the 'internet for fun' is maybe over, or maybe the old ways are ending and something new will born from it.

I absolutely agree that people will continue to find ways to be doing shit just for the hell of it, because its fun and we want to

But people will also continue to expand their corrosive influence over humanity's output in pursuit of power. Our passions will be monetized in every form of art we create.

It's not that humans will ever stop their passionate pursuits, but the mediums through which we express ourselves will continue to change

The form in which we've done these things for the past few decades is being corrupted by bots that represent a regression towards the mean in our art. The algorithms that decide what we see will move further towards feeding us generalized slop content juxtaposed with targeted advertising

But I also agree something new will rise from the ashes. People are insulating into smaller communities of this to curate the content we see and connect with likeminded people.

I have hope that if we continue to keep these embers alive, we will find a new way to burn brightly again
