hi all

i want to put some ads on the site, but i wanted to check with the community first. the goal here is to cover our current costs and allow me to invest more time and money on char.

the idea is to insert affiliate links that look like posts in feed. at a ratio of 1 ad to 20 posts. they would be clearly labeled as affiliate links and only for an approved set of products and services that i have used and am comfortable recommending. proton mail/vpn, vpns, web hosting, privacy tools, etc...

i dont minds ads themselves , but i think a good idea might be if you make them somehow differ in color from others posts in feed . for example , make them lighter than real peoples posts . me personally , im a big hater when ads are implemented in a way to look like a part of the website / app and its barely distinguishable from the actual feed , like ad comments on reddit or ads on pinterest .

i agree. i will make them visually different from posts. goal is to balance ability to differentiate from posts but still fit the site theme

second this; drives me up a wall when the ads look identical to regular posts, and are so frequent that you can’t discern what’s an ad and what’s not !

Sounds fine to me, especially with the approval/vetting ahead of time! Very considerate, and also sounds like the type of stuff that this community would likely be a good market for!

See, this is what ads were MEANT to be--honest recommendations showcasing solid products/services. A lost art, truly. I'd hope that as the site grows, it continues that with that community-first mentality <3

that sounds fair. maybe possibility of having ppl advertise on ur site like webcomics or their art site, etc? thinking of those old fashioned banners on forums and smiling at the thought
