Basically, the first time I ever felt like I was floating in an abstract soup was when I was studying calculus. My teacher would just tell me to memorize equations and seldom explain what any of it meant. It all felt so arbitrary. I used to love math before this but in those final two years I started to fear math, and hate it because I understood none of it. I still haven't forgiven that teacher btw...both my math teachers during this period were atrocious, or just not the right fit for me. Either way, its taken forever since then to slowly build my way back up and build a good relation with math again, and epsilon is a reminder of the journey I've had with math, plus a reminder that this abstract soup of a world that I live in is just like Calculus - scary at first but beautiful if you give it time and try to truly understand it. Plus epsilon sounds cool too lmao, so there is that.

Lmao yeah, I hope we’re cool like that too! Altho, alternatively we could also be 220 and 284. Because these two numbers see what’s known as Amicable Primes, and wouldn’t you say we’re amicable?

Two numbers are amicable when the factors of one add up to the other. 220 and 284 were the first ever amicable primes found, and they were found by the Ancient Greeks!

In this case; 220’s factors are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 20, 22, 44, 55, 110. These added together make 284. And the factors of 284 are 1, 2, 4, 71, 142 which make 220. Ofc when you list the factors, for the amicable primes calculation, you have to list every factor other than the number itself. So in this way, we could 220 and 284 instead!

What’s cool about these is that they require very simple maths but mathematicians are yet to find them all and they appear to be quite rare as the next pair is 17,296 and 18,416!

It’s make me really happy if that’s the case. Math has so much more to offer than what we learn in classes and it’s high time people acknowledge how much cooler it is than schools give it credit for. Plus it’s far more fulfilling when you learn new things for the sake of learning and not passing some dumbass test. So I hope you have fun with that cute little concept, I learnt about it from a novel I once read, which was called The Math Professor and the Housemaid (I think?). It was by a Japanese author and it was such a cute concept I just had to look it up!

i relate to not feeling human lmao
in my case, i feel more abstract, or untethered...but even more accurately, I feel like I'm floating in an uncertain space desperately trying to cling onto something solid, something real, especially with the way everything is going in today's world. None of it makes sense and people's lackluster reaction to the atrocities going on makes me feel like im going crazy. To be fair, most people feel helpless against the modern world's chaos but its just interesting because historically we've always done something when things got bad. Historically, humans have always course corrected through a revolution or something but this time, we're all just going along...when's it all gonna come to a boil? What time's the revolution?

as someone who is older than you and knows many people who work on the improvement and saving of the world i can assure you: course correction is coming. it just happens more quietly, generally, when it is happening TO you rather than reading about it happening to someone else. a bit like waking up and realising you can breathe through both nostrils now after a month long stubborn illness.

highly recommend looking for local places that might need a little help ie soup kitchens or library programs. you'll see it most easily there. idk if this came across as Old Monster Talking Down To You but i hope not. it's just my knee jerk response to people going through what you're going through and you deserve assurance and kindness

No, this was much needed and it didn’t feel like an old monster talking down to me, instead just someone who understands the frustration and chose to assure me that people are trying to help and that I’m not going crazy! That means a lot.

I feel even crazier because half the things I hope would happen in retaliation are dramatic and illegal - like robbing and burning down data centres. Look, as much as I am fascinated by the math and the technology behind what we call AI, its impact on humanity, on our environment, on our economy is enough to make me believe this world will be far better off without AI. But then I start to lose hope when I see the greed-incarnates that are hellbent on peddling AI into our lives, ruining it while singing falsehoods and painting us a wonderful fictional future that is as much a lie as is their technology. And the politicians that we have elected that are meant to look after us are turning a blind eye, so who can I even trust, you know?

So your assurance was really helpful!

i am glad. i just remember how easy it is to come across as talking down. that said - here is a quick way to know something is absolutely going to crumble when the right people get in power.

think about how many people detest AI and how people demand ways to turn it off, block it off, hate what it does to jobs. notice how despite this it's being thrown in our faces almost as if we're not being hears. of course you've noticed.

that's because even the people behind it don't believe in its ability to stand up on its own two feet.
but they've already stuck investors behind it and so they're desperate to make their money back somehow.
in other words once the money runs out the monoliths pushing AI are going to be in a bit of a pickle. :)

What that pickle will be, I dunno! But they'll be hesitant to keep pushing it without any money involved.

How are investors even being sold on this idea to begin with?? there are no results that AI has generated that’d convince me that it’s going to take over and be a huge part of our lives…

Ig it’s just their desperation to get on the ground level of something? On the off chance it works out, they want to be able to ride that rocketship towards ultimate riches…the problem i these greed incarnates are never satisfied even if they have more than enough for themselves and their next generation… its sad really and I hope they soon stop ruining our planet over it.

man won't lie i do sound like i know what i am talking about, but i can't quite pinpoint the part on how they managed to sell AI to them. Likely the same way NFTs got sold to them (which is actually a good example of my theory - you don't hear much about those anymore do ya?)

NFTs were a scam from a mile away and yet we still had musicians and celebrities buying into it AND SHOWING IT OFF?? I can never figure out what went through their heads when they okayed such a bizarre and humiliating stunt? Like it was all PR for the NFTs, right? And it’s so dumb because people were literally like: but I can just copy and paste, or download that image…so what’s this nft ownership about?! Like it was such bullshit, thank god it died off. Also who was using blockchain like that in the first place? That’s what NFTs relied on, blockchain technology, but no one used blockchain enough to give a fuck about NFTs so I just don’t get why they thought NFTs would be a good idea. I hope AIs fizzles out soon like NFTs have cause what is this weird nightmare we live in rn…
