Despite zero moderation, this site has essentially become a microcosm of tumblr rather than 4chan, despite being advertised (to my understanding) primarily on reddit

Id be curious to see the range of sites/subreddits and demographics the advertising for this site have been targeted towards online.

Our ability to thus far avoid toxicity feels almost a bit uncanny. Like for example I think ads on 4chan would be cheap(?) but you'd be trawling in an open sewer.

The irony of using targeted ads to curate the first users of a no-algorithm zero-moderation board is a bit funny. But also an excellent move in the establishment of the early board culture here.

Either that or this site was targeted purely at me, and you're all just a botted psyop by Big Queer or smth

Self-moderation exists within every group. A post not sent is a post that doesn't need active user moderation.

That is much more of an explanation, than a reason to question its state. Especially within the rather accepting communities of Reddit, such as technology, gaming and programming. Reddit is a monolith and it being as harshly moderated as it is, a very wellknown and proven bias has formed over the years of its existence. As before, especially within the named areas of interest.

This is true. From some former projects I've worked on, advertising to an audience of about there's a cost per thousand impressions of roughly $0.30 with some specifications made. The possible demographics that are listed to be targetable by 4chan.org/advertise are Age, Gender, Location, Interest and Education.

tl;dr Reddit ads.

Reddit has a proven "progressive" bias in the sense that most of the larger communities are moderated that way.

But reddit certainly isnt a monolith. The ability for users to create their own small communities with low oversight to their moderation allows plenty of the edgier and less accepting types of communities to flourish until they get large enough that "normies" will flood in and moderation will receive more oversight from the admins.

reddit has progressive instutions but you're giving a large portion of the userbase too much credit

Then again that proves the theory. Choom's targeted interests are of those large subreddits. If, instead, one would advertise to r/ConsumeProducts (now dead). But by choosing giants on the giant platform, a choice was made and a certain type was chosen. Even if inadvertently.

Now, objective main reply done. Let's move to personal experience. I've come here from a post @liz 🌟 made on a different medium. Primarily, I interact with people in an established friend group, mostly focusing on games. Secondarily, 4chan. Reddit is far behind other means of online interaction.
The main people who'd come here
1) Browse Reddit (see above.)
2) Don't use adBlocker (younger demographic, especially in tech circles)
3) Be open enough to enter a new place you've only seen through advertising
If I were to one day browse Reddit dot com without an adBlocker, I personally wouldn't click it. Similar with my browsing friends, those who are in their own tight-knit communities of two dozen members, if that.
There are no rules in those tight communities, neither is in this. But there is a specific kind of person in each, each making a decision, each decision making the group more moderated, purely out of their own volition.

Choices made are paths created, to be stepped on by those to follow.
