somewhere in the 2010s car culture stopped being about building and started being about who had the most expensive stock-looking car. welcome to the oem+ era. welcome to the primer gray audi on rotiforms era.

wide body kits, neon paints, wings large enough to generate actual downforce, and a serious turbo kit under the hood to back it all up. the car was a project and the project was the point.

then suddenly the flex was the car itself. highest trim factory seats. dealer options. oem floor mats presented like they were a rare find. a nearly new audi in the right shade of gray, on rotiforms that cost more than most of the builds they replaced.

people still modified their cars. just instead of a wide body kit that transformed the entire silhouette, it was a lip kit you had to crouch down and squint to notice. subtle. intentional. completely invisible at any speeds above parking lot.

the meets still happened but somewhere between the craft coffee and the matching outfits, the wrenches disappeared.

car culture peaked somewhere between 1999 and 2004 and nobody agreed on why.

the old heads were already there. meets, mods, import tuner magazine, real knowledge passed between real people in real parking lots at 1am

(note: it was already the time when "ricer" was a term used to describe a pimped out hyundai, not a racist remark towards people from far east. kinda wholesome ending?)

then fast and furious came out and suddenly everyone wanted a black civic coupe with chrome wheels and green neons under it.
the old heads complained that the cars were wrong, the races were wrong, the nos didn't work like that, and that the movie sucked. they were right about all of it.

but for one specific moment, modifying cars was the coolest thing in the world. everyone knew someone who knew someone with a turboed mitsubishi eclipse in a garage somewhere. it was loud, unreliable, and terribly cheap, but it also was the thing everyone wanted.

your car has about 50 warning lights. most of them mean nothing urgent. two of them will ruin your life if you ignore them

the oil pressure light is the one with the little oil can. if it comes on while driving, stop immediately. not at the next exit. now. you have about 30 seconds before the engine starts destroying itself from the inside

the temperature light means your engine is overheating. same deal. pull over, turn off, do not open the radiator cap unless you want to explain to the hospital how you burned your face.

the check engine light is the one everyone ignores. usually fine. sometimes not. the only way to know is a $20 reader from any car parts store that tells you exactly what's wrong in plain english. mechanics charge $100 for this.

the tyre pressure light will come on every winter because cold air is denser. just add some air. it's not a sign of impending doom, it's just physics being annoying.

in 2005 robert kubica showed up to the polish national colin mcrae rally championship. not the real one. the video game.

the regulars had teams, memorized every stage, spent weeks on car setups. kubica had no computer. he'd played maybe 20-40 hours at a friend's place. he ran default settings because he didn't know you could change them

he finished, thought it went badly, then realized the timekeeper had mistyped a digit and added a minute to his total. once corrected, kubica had won by 0.7 seconds.

the forum obviously accused him of cheating. very loudly. after the event. kubica didn't care and offered to send the trophy back and returned to driving real cars

he later made fake accounts to race in online rally leagues, which caused its own drama.

the same goes for ultrasonic rodent repellers for cars. they are often ineffective. if a car mechanic wants you to buy one, DON'T. it's a scam.

it's also worth noting that they can be quite a bother for other humans. i can hear those repellers, and so can many other people. if i could, i would ban them and tell their manufacturers to fuck off.
