brood parasites are birds that lay their eggs in the nests of other species and leave those hosts to incubate the eggs and raise the chicks.

common cuckoo is known for laying its eggs in the nests of more than 100 different host species, including warblers, pipits, and robins.

birds build nests by collecting materials such as twigs, grass, mud, and spider silk. they use their beaks and feet to weave, shape, and fasten them into stable structures.

they typically form a strong, cup-shaped base. then, they line it with softer materials like feathers or moss to provide insulation and protection.

the same goes for ultrasonic rodent repellers for cars. they are often ineffective. if a car mechanic wants you to buy one, DON'T. it's a scam.

it's also worth noting that they can be quite a bother for other humans. i can hear those repellers, and so can many other people. if i could, i would ban them and tell their manufacturers to fuck off.

based on scientific studies and expert reviews, infrasound and ultrasound devices for scaring away birds generally do not work.

even if a sound device is audible to birds, they will eventually become accustomed to it if it does not present a real danger.

just to be clear - it's a curious kind of staring. as if they can't comprehend why a tall ape would give them peanuts without getting anything in return. maybe they think i'm stupid.

i love crows. i actually befriended a mated pair of local crows. they hang out close to my house and i always greet them when i stumble upon them on the street.

i also feed them peanuts on a regular basis. they now know when my balcony is and come around at least once a day to stare at me and grab a quick snack.

crows are highly intelligent birds. they are often said to have thinking abilities similar to those of a seven-year-old child or even great apes.

as part of the corvid family, they can solve complex problems, think abstractly, and make their own tools.

the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, typically measuring between 2.5 and 3.5 meters / 8 to 11.5 feet, with some individuals exceeding 3.7 meters / 12 feet.

these massive seabirds use their long wings to glide over the southern ocean for thousands of kilometers without flapping.

geese are often very aggressive and protective, particularly in the spring when they are guarding their nests, eggs, or young goslings.

they may chase or attack people, using loud hissing, honking, and flapping their wings to scare them. it can sometimes lead to minor injuries from bites or falls.

different birds have different lifespans. they can range from two years to entire decades.

it’s been claimed that some parrots, especially large ones like cockatoos and macaws, have lived to be over one hundred years old.

birds know where to migrate thanks to a number of different mechanisms.

1) birds have a biological "compass" in their brains or eyes. it helps them sense the Earth's magnetic field, which allows them to determine where they are heading.

2) birds can use the sun's position during the day and different star patterns at night.

3) birds often follow visual landmarks, such as mountain ranges, coastlines, and rivers.

4) birds are often born with a built-in, genetic map. it can guide them during their first migration.

the bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world, weighing less than two grams and measuring roughly two inches in length.

often mistaken for bees, these tiny, iridescent birds can beat their wings 80 times per second and build nests about the size of a thimble.

crows are very community-driven birds. they gather in communal roosts to sleep. one roost can range from dozens to thousands of birds. it's a bonding experience that gives them increased security against large predators. in addition, it gives them an opportunity to discuss where the best feeding grounds are.

if you see a fledgling on the ground, don't immediately assume that it needs your help! it might just be a feathered, healthy bird that's just learning to fly. the parents are probably nearby, watching and feeding it.

the rare exception here is if the bird is in immediate danger. for instance, if it falls from a tree and ends up sitting in the middle of a busy street, dazed and confused.

in case you're not sure whether the bird is okay, call your local wildlife rescue and ask for help!

kestrels might be able to see ultraviolet light! since most small rodents leave urine trails that reflect ultraviolet light, kestrels can learn to use it to identify areas where prey is more abundant.
